Apocalipse 2
Johnson - Death was a real possibility for these believers. But greater than the fear of physical death should be the fear of God’s eternal judgment (Lk 12:4–5). Even though death was the outcome of Adam’s sin, in Christ there is a complete reversal for humankind (Ge 2:16–17; Ro 5:15–19). Since the messianic believers at Smyrna were under attack by some in the Jewish community, it was reassuring indeed to hear the Lord himself say that his followers would not be harmed by the second death, i.e., the lake of fire (Rev 20:14; 21:8). (See Revelation) Overcomes (nikao) is in the present tense which means as their general lifestyle they experience victory over their enemies, the world, the flesh and the devil. This is not speaking of perfection (only Jesus achieved perfection in this earthly life) but of direction, a direction only possible by the supernatural enablement of God's Spirit (cf Php 2:13NLT+, see notes above on Ephesus). In other words, if one says they believe in Jesus and yet they bring forth no "fruit" giving evidence that they are pursuing holiness (cf Heb 12:14+), but instead continually, habitually practice deeds of wickedness, there is little evidence that they are genuine believers whose names are in the book of life. These souls are not destined for heaven but sadly are destined for a forever future in the Lake of fire, the Second Death. Herbert Lockyer - This second letter came from Him "which was dead, and is alive again," and was addressed to those who were about to die for their faith (Revelation 2:8, 10). Overcomers in Smyrna required endurance suited to the death struggle. What conflict raged between light and darkness! Allegiance to Christ then meant loss of character, possessions and life itself, and the faithful required strong faith and clear spiritual trust of Him who would not forsake His valiant saints. Many of them were called upon to die terrible deaths, even as their Master had died, but the promise enabling them to die triumphantly was deliverance from "the second death" which issues in "the lake of fire" (Revelation 20:14; 21:8). For such overcomers there was the promise of the crown or completeness of life for evermore. To escape the hurt of the second, eternal death is a prize worth fighting for throughout a lifetime with Satan and sin dogging our heels. (Borrow All the promises of the Bible) Question - What is the second death? Answer: The second death is mentioned on multiple occasions in the book of Revelation and is synonymous with the lake of fire. It is a “death” in that it is a separation from God, the Giver of life. It is called the “second” one because it follows physical death. Revelation 21:8 explains the second death in the most detail: “The cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars – their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.” Three other places in Revelation also mention the second death. The first is Revelation 2:11: “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes will not be hurt at all by the second death.” In this verse, Jesus promises that believers (“overcomers”; see 1 John 5:4) will not experience the lake of fire. The second death is exclusively for those who have rejected Christ. It is not a place believers in Christ should fear. Revelation 20:6 speaks of the second death in relation to a future period called the Millennium: “Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.” This verse notes three important facts. First, those who die for their faith in Jesus during the Tribulation will later be resurrected to enter the Millennium and live with Him. Second, these martyrs will escape the lake of fire or second death. Third, they will reign with Christ. The second death is also mentioned in Revelation 20:14-15: “Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” At the end of time, even death and the grave (Hades) will be thrown into the lake of fire. In addition, every person not included in the book of life will be thrown into the lake of fire. This condition will be final; the destination is permanent. In summary, the second death is a reference to the lake of fire where those who are separated from God by their sin will dwell for eternity. This judgment was recorded in Scripture as a warning to unbelievers to seek the salvation that Jesus Christ provides. The coming judgment should also challenge believers to share their faith. There is a vast difference between the final destination of those who know Christ and those who do not. The second birth is spiritual and occurs when a person comes to faith in Jesus Christ Only believers are “born twice.” 1st Death Yes Yes The first death occurs at the end of one’s physical life. 1st Resurrection No Yes The first resurrection is a category and occurs in stages, beginning with the resurrection of Christ (1Cor. 15:20) and ending with the resurrection just prior to the Millennial Kingdom (Rev. 20:5-6). Only believers participate in the first resurrection. 2nd Resurrection Yes No The second resurrection occurs at the end of the Millennial Kingdom at the Great White Throne Judgment (Rev. 20:11-13). Only unbelievers participate in the second resurrection. See Order of Resurrection.. 2nd Death Yes No The second death is after the Millennium and the Great White Throne Judgment (Rev. 20:14-15). As there is eternal life beyond this present life for the faithful, so there is eternal death beyond the death of the wicked The second death is commonly known as hell. The vision of Christ as He presents Himself to Smyrna. "These things saith The First and The Last, which was dead and is alive." This vision of Christ was particularly encouraging to the saints in Smyrna because they were suffering great tribulation and standing in jeopardy of their lives at every moment. Christ seems to tell them that He too was hated even unto the death. Around His Cross the enemy centered his attack; the mob passed by, wagging their heads against Him; the assembly of the wicked enclosed Him. Finally Christ sounded forth His victorious cry, "It is finished." Then He commended His spirit unto the Father and yielded up the ghost. Three days later Christ came forth from the grave bearing in His hand the keys of death and of hades. It is this Christ Who comforts Smyrna's persecuted saints with the words: "I was dead but am alive again." 2. A vision of Smyrna's drift from the simplicities of the Gospel. Paul wrote to Galatia, "I marvel that ye are so soon removed from Him who called you into the grace of Christ, unto another gospel." That was Smyrna's fault — "There were those among them who troubled them perverting the Gospel of Christ." Against these the Holy Spirit gives strong warning to the Church at Galatia, a warning applicable to Smyrna: "But though we, or an angel from Heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. "As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed" (Gal. 1:8, 9). 3. A vision of the Smyrna overcomers. There are two distinct thoughts just here. (1) THEY ARE OVERCOMERS BECAUSE THEY STOOD TRUE TO GOD against the encroachments of Judaistic teaching, the "other gospel" that had crept into the Church at Smyrna. They overcame in that they were not caught in the drift away from the faith. Many around them, concerning the faith, had made shipwreck, of these there were such as Hymenæus and Alexander (see I Tim. 1:20), who were delivered unto satan that they might learn not to blaspheme. They found no part in the overcomer's reward. (2) THEY ARE OVERCOMERS BECAUSE THEY STOOD THE STORM OF PERSECUTION and "were faithful unto death." That is, they paid for their faith with their lives; they were ready to be "offered up," to be martyrs unto the Lord Jesus Christ. 4. A vision of the overcomer's reward. "He that overcometh shall in no wise be hurt of the second death." If, under Ephesus, our minds went back to Eden they now go back again. This time we go back to hear the sentence of death pronounced upon Adam. However, as we stand with the dying of Smyrna we have no dread of the greatest sting of all that lay in that old Adamic sentence. The sting of death has been taken away. If under Ephesus, our minds went forward to the Tree of Life in the new Paradise of God, they now go forward again. Only, this time, we stand about the Great White Throne and we see the dead small and great standing before God and being judged according to their works. Then the judged are cast into the lake of fire which is the second death. In the day of that great assize, the Smyrna overcomers will realize the value of their victorious faith — they shall not be hurt of the second death. Apocalipse 2
Johnson says "The coming reign of the Messiah over the world is to be shared with his disciples (Rev 1:6; 3:21; 20:6; 1 Co 6:2)." (See Revelation) Paige Patterson - The humble servants of Christ who serve the church at Thyatira (ED: AND ALL OVERCOMERS) will someday be given enormous authority over all the nations in keeping with what the Lord himself promised when he said, “[He that is] faithful over a few things, I will make ruler over many” (Mt 25:21NKJV). However, to assign this as a promise merely for the ultimate eternal heavenly realm also reduces to insignificance the reference to tōn ethnōn or “the nations.” More probable would be a view that would associate this promise with assignments in the millennial kingdom discussed in chap. 20. (Revelation: An Exegetical and Theological Exposition) Lehman Strauss adds "The scene here is an earthly one. The emphasis is upon a demonstrated authority over the nations on the earth. There is a problem here for those who deny that there is to be a literal kingdom of Christ on earth in which His saints will rule with Him. I see in this promise strong support in favor of the Millennium.....This idea of the saints reigning with Christ is in keeping with the original purpose of God for man. In the Genesis account of the creation of man, the first of the divine injunctions was regal in character. God said, "Let them have dominion... over all the earth" (Genesis 1:26). The failure of the first Adam with reference to his rule over the earth did not mean that man had lost forever his divinely-bestowed dominion. It is to be restored. Christ assured the disciples, "It is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom" (Luke 12:32); "Ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel" (Matthew 19:28). Paul wrote, "And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with Him, that we may be also glorified together" (Romans 8:17). This is the wonderful outlook for the child of God. "Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world?" (1 Corinthians 6:2) "Know ye not that we shall judge angels?" (1 Corinthians 6:3). "But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever" (Daniel 7:18). This fact is asserted three times within the space of that single chapter (Daniel 7:18, 22, 27) " (BORROW The Book of the Revelation: Outlined Studies) John Walvoord - He promises that those who keep His works unto the end will be given a responsible position of judgment over the nations. Closely following the prediction of a second coming is this first reference in Revelation to the millennial reign of Christ (cf., however, 1:6–7). The overcoming Christians are promised places of authority. They will share the rule of Christ over the nations of the world. (Revelation 2: The Letters To Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamos, And Thyatira) Keeps (obeys, guards, heeds, observes, preserves) (5083) tereo from teros - a guard or warden) means to keep an eye on, to keep something in view, to hold firmly, to attend carefully, or to watch over it (watchful care - Jesus' prayer to His Father for His disciples - Jn 17:11). Tereo speaks of watching over, of taking care of, of guarding something which is in one’s possession keeping it from loss or injury. It means to watch as one would some precious thing. The idea is to observe attentively, to heed, to keep watch over and to retain in custody. John's uses of tereo in the Revelation - Rev. 1:3; Rev. 2:26; Rev. 3:3; Rev. 3:8; Rev. 3:10; Rev. 12:17; Rev. 14:12; Rev. 16:15; Rev. 22:7; Rev. 22:9 Tereo with idea of keep watch or guard - Mt 27:36, 27:54, Mt 28:4 (guards = tereo), Jn 17:11, 12, Jn 17:15 (with nuance of protection from Satan), Acts 12:5, Acts 12:6 (watching), Acts 16:23, Acts 24:23, 25:4, 25:21 (held in custody), 1Jn 5:18, Jude 1:1, 6, Tereo in the sense of to preserve or maintain -Jn 2:10, 1Cor 7:37, 2Cor 11:9, Eph 4:3, 1Th 5:23, 1Ti 5:22, 2Ti 4:7, James 1:27, 1Pe 1:4, 2Pe 2:4, 2Pe 2:9, 2Pe 2:17, 2Pe 3:7, Jude 1:13, 21, Rev 16:15 Tereo with the idea of obey - Mt 19:17, Mt 23:3 (tereo = observe), Mt 28:20, Jn 8:51, 52 (one who keeps Jesus' Word = a believer = one who will never see the second death in hell), Jn 9:16 (keep = observe the Sabbath), Jn 14:15 (description of a genuine disciple - love is not just with one's lips but is validated by one's life lived in loving obedience to God), Jn 14:21, 23, 24 (no love = no obedience = not a believer - Note Jesus is not talking about legalistic obedience but Spirit enabled obedience which is the only obedience that pleases the Father!), Jn 15:10 (used twice), Jn 15:20 (used twice), Jn 17:6 (the 11 disciples), Acts 15:5, 1Ti 6:14, James 2:10, 1Jn 2:3, 4, 5, 3:22, 1Jn 3:24, 1Jn 5:2, 3, Rev 1:3 (heed), Rev 2:26, 3:3, 3:8, 3:10, 12:17, 14:12, Rev 22:7 (heeds), Rev 22:9. Jesus uses tereo in his "job description" of a genuine Christ follower (disciple) in Mt 28:20 , where tereo "does not merely speak of the act of obeying His commands, but of a solicitous desire that we do not disobey any of them but on the other hand, that we obey them perfectly." (Wuest) Deeds (work, works) (2041) ergon gives us our English word "erg," a unit of work or energy, equal to the work done by a force of one dyne when its point of application moves one centimeter in the direction of action of the force. Friberg defines ergon - (1) generally work; (a) active, anything done or to be done = deed, work, action (Jn 3.21); (b) passive, anything achieved or made as the product of an action or process = workmanship, deed, accomplishment (1Cor 3.13); (2) in contrast to rest = work, activity (Heb 4.3, 4); deed (1Jn 3.18) in contrast to word (lo,goj); as a corollary or complement to faith, as a practical demonstration or proof of it work(s), deed(s) (James 2.18); (3) as God's activity in the world work(s), deed(s), act(s) (Jn 5.20); (4) as human duties and occupations = work, task (Acts 14.26); (5) in a weakened sense = matter, thing, undertaking (Acts 5.38) (Borrow Analytical Lexicon of the Greek New Testament) Gingrich adds "1. deed, action Lk 24:19; Col 3:17; 2 Th 2:17; Heb 4:3, 4, 10; Jas 2:14ff. The word termination is close but misses the essence of the meaning, because a process can be terminated without reaching completion or consummation, which is the essence of the meaning of telos. The idea of telos is that the various stages that are reached to go on to full development (eternal significance). Accordingly "Christ is the end (consummation or telos) of the Law" (Ro 10:4), for Christ brought all the components of the OT to their complete fulfillment by His perfect life and death, and yet the law was not terminated (e.g., it is written on the hearts of believers (Heb 8:10+, Heb 10:16+) and God's Spirit still uses the Law to bring souls to Christ Who is the consummation of the Law! - see Law as a "tutor" in Gal 3:19-25+, cf the Law's effect to make sin exceedingly sinful, to make it come alive in Ro 7:8-12+, Ro 3:19+ gives law's purpose = "to keep people from having excuses." See discussion of Purpose of the Law). Authority (1849) exousia from éxesti = it is permitted, it is lawful) means the power to do something and was a technical term used in the law courts, of a legal right. "Authority or right is the dominant meaning (of exousia) in the New Testament." (Vincent) Exousía refers to delegated authority and combines the idea of the "right and the might", these attributes having been granted to someone. O JESUS, SON OF GOD, IN THEE Charles Wesley O Jesus, Son of God, in Thee I trust for that last victory, And kept by my eternal friend, I keep Thy works, ’till life shall end, Obedient unto death endure, And find Thy richest promise sure. So when Thou shalt on earth appear, To fix Thy heavenly kingdom here, I shall with my Redeemer join, Partake the victory divine, And clothed with Thy resistless power The Conqueror of the world adore. With Thee in full paternal might, Vested, I shall go forth to fight, Shall see the nations broke, subdued, And scattered by Thine iron rod, Swift as the shivered vessel flies And share the triumph of the skies. Robert Neighbor - The Overcomers at Thyatira "And he that overcometh, and keepeth My works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: And he shall role them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of My Father" (Rev. 2:26, 27). In Thyatira we have the church which has sinned in that she has harbored and even encouraged the seducing of the saints by an ecclesiastical hierarchy that demanded world alliances and idolatrous practices. As we turn our attention toward the Thyatira overcomers, let us consider several correlated truths. 1. The vision of Christ as He appears to Thyatira. "And unto the angel of the Church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, Who hath His eyes like unto a flame of fire, and His feet like fine brass" (vs. 18). To the church that permits the powerful and worldly authoritative Jezebel to dominate it, and to drive it, Christ stands with eyes of fire fully cognizant of her sins; and with feet like fine brass, possessed with all authority and judgment against her sins. Christ will not yield His place of Headship to any man, or to any group of men. 2. The vision of what overcoming means in this Church. In brief, the Thyatira overcomer is the one who refuses to become dominated by the ecclesiastical powers that demand obeisance and that lead into a false worship. This overcomer acknowledges the one Head of the Church, the Lord Jesus Christ, He bows to but one authoritative voice — the Holy Spirit Who speaks unto the churches. This overcomer will be forced outside the camp with his Master; but he goes gladly bearing His reproach. He accepts the whip of Jezebel rather than yield to her demands. 3. The vision of the overcomer's reward. The vision falls into two chief parts: (1) I WILL GIVE HIM AUTHORITY OVER THE NATIONS. This is exactly the reverse of the teaching of Jezebel. She, as a representative of the government, sought authority over the church, God gives the overcomer authority over governments. Just here we must walk with care. We have in this promise to the Thyatira overcomer no commission to the Church to seek governmental sway in this age. Untold harm always results by mixing dispensations. The Catholic Church errs, grievously, in seeking civil power. She is ever ambitious to attain now, what awaits for overcomers in the millennium. The Church during this age is to be hated, maligned and persecuted by an opposing world. She is to remain a minority, and a separated people. When Christ comes again it will be different. He will come as King of kings and as Lord of lords. He will reign in both the civil and the spiritual realms. The promise to the Thyatira overcomers is that they shall reign with Him. This is no small matter. To the Apostles who had left all to follow the Lord Jesus, Christ said: "When the Son of Man shall sit on the throne of His glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel." Illustration: A man of large business told us one day something like this: Said he, "There are certain ones who have toiled with me and helped me to make this business a success, and I propose to make them my heirs. They have suffered with me, and, according to the spirit of the Master, they should reign with me, and this is my plan in their behalf." (2) "I WILL GIVE HIM THE MORNING STAR." The Lord comes as the "Morning Star" in the rapture; He comes as the "Sun of Righteousness" in His revelation. He is the "Morning Star" to His Church; He is the "Sun of Righteousness" to Israel. How blessed then is the promise, "I will give him the Morning Star." Certainly when "one is taken and another left" the overcomers of Thyatira will be among the taken ones. RULE WITH A ROD OF IRON AND HE SHALL RULE (poimaino) THEM WITH A ROD OF IRON, AS THE VESSELS OF THE POTTER ARE BROKEN (suntribo) TO PIECES - This rule will be shared by Jesus with the overcomer during the Millennial Reign of Christ and will be exercised over the Gentiles (nations) who enter into that reign. Rod of iron indicates this rule will be stern when necessary.
