Lenski - The point of the figurative language is this: as a babe longs for nothing but its mother’s milk and will take nothing else, so every Christian should take no spiritual nourishment save the Word. The imagery is beautiful and expressive. Look at a babe at its mother’s breast! In this way you should ever drink the milk of the Word. Peter understood the intent of Jesus’ action which is recorded in Mt. 18:2, 3 and here carries the illustration which Jesus used still farther, down to babes that have just been born.
